Why can’t I do this pose? Common misconceptions about the pigeon pose is a video about the number one yoga pose that I get the most questions about is – without a doubt – the Pigeon pose (aka Pada Rajakapotasana). The questions are often along the lines of “Why can’t I do Pigeon?” “I can’t get my leg into the correct alignment, what am I doing wrong?” “My Pigeon pose looks so different from others’ – why?”
There are several misconceptions about the Pigeon pose that mostly originate from the cues that yoga teachers give or in the language that is used when describing the pose. In this video I discuss three common alignment cues that are given for this pose, why they don’t work for everybody, and how focusing on these kinds of aesthetic cues is not necessarily good for your practice.
Have you ever heard the following alignment cues and tried to fix your body into Pigeon feeling a bit awkward or unsafe in the pose?
1) "Align your front leg shin parallel with the top of your mat"
2) "Align the thigh of your front leg parallel with the long side of your mat"
3) "Square your hips"
Let’s discuss why these aesthetics-based cues are not functional for SO many people nor a base for a healthy and safe Pigeon pose. Join the discussion in the comments below, I’d love to hear what your experience with this pose is!
