A loose rail has been listed as the cause of the France train crash which resulted in six deaths and nearly 30 injuries, eight of them severe.
According to the SNCF, a metal bar which was connecting two rails near the Bretigny-sur-Orge station had become detached. The focus of the investigation is now expected to shift towards how the piece of metal had become detached. It is expected that checks on the rail connectors will be carried out across the whole network.
Over 370 passengers were aboard the 7 carriage train car -- en route from Paris to the city of Limoges -- when the third and fourth cars broke free from the first two, 16 miles south of Paris. At around 5 p.m. (1500 GMT) the third car plunged through a crowded platform taking the remaining four cars with it.
France's worst rail disaster in 25 years happened just ahead of Bastille Day, a busy commuter holiday. It is still unclear whether those killed were passengers or pedestrians waiting on the platform.
