Welcome to a new camera test were we find out how well the Panasonic Gh4 with the Metabones Speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 (F1.2) stands up against the Sony A7s with the Sony 24-70mm F4 lens, when it comes to low light performance.
As you may know, I recently bought the Panasonic GH4 with the Speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35mm with aperture F1.8. Together with the Speedbooster, I can shoot video with aperture F1.2. So for low light shooting, I can capture a lot of light with this lens and the Speedbooster adapter. And together with 4k internal recording, 96fps full HD slow motion, a lot of features and a good grip, this is the perfect camera for me. However, the Panasonic GH4 itself isn’t the best when it comes to low light, and it will give you a lot of noise, when gaining the ISO. That’s not the case with the Sony A7s, so that’s why Eskild bought it.
Eskilds earlier camera, the Canon 5D mark iii, actually got stolen, so he had to buy a new camera and a new lens. What he liked about the 5D was the full frame sensor and the good low light performance, so therefore the Sony A7S was a good alternative. And since he mostly do run and gun types of videos, he bought himself a Sony 24-70mm lens with aperture F4 and image stabilizer. To both have a lot of zoom and image stabilization, was the best option for him. And since the low light inside the camera is so good, he thought he wouldn’t need a fast lens.
So for almost the same amount of money, we both have a good all round lens, and the opportunity to shoot in low light. But which one will win the low light test? Will it be the GH4 with aperture 1.2, or the Sony A7S with aperture 4? Let’s test it out!
