You may have learned the U.S abolished slavery with the 13th Amendment.... but you'd be mistaken.
Under the 13th Amendment, involuntary servitude remains legal as punishment for a crime
However, even those who are not convicted of crimes - including - immigrant detainees- have allegedly been subjected to forced labor behind bars, threatened with solitary confinement or longer sentences if they refuse to work.
It's vital to recognize the legacy of slavery and racism in the U.S. prison and detention centers today.
We think for too long the prison system has reaped profits from forced labour and slavery.
We are calling on all sectors to divest and end contracts with abuse facilities and reform contracting so that prisoners and immigrant detainees are paid fair wages.
