Some Wisconsin lawmakers want to drop state licensing regulations for massage therapists, arguing that removing the requirement would open up opportunities for job seekers.
Opponents say letting therapists police themselves would make the public less safe and is ill-timed, given the number of women who have come forward with allegations of assault.
The Wisconsin chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association said the state disciplined 16 therapists in 2016 alone, a 100 percent increase from the previous year.
