Ukrainian Writer Oksana Zabuzhko paid tribute to the women fighting against Russian forces in Ukraine at a European parliament session organized to mark International Women's Day.
It has a long tradition in Eastern European countries and across the former Soviet Union, where men often mark the day by buying flowers or gifts for women.
Ukrainian women at a refugee camp near Poland's border village of Medyka were asked what they hoped for on International Women's Day, to which they responded they did not want flowers or presents - only peace.
Victoria from the eastern city of Dnipro hoped for strength for all women from her country and faith in the army.
International Women's Day on March 8, aims to recognize the achievements of women and highlight the campaign for gender equality.
