The artificial intelligence program Watson has provided its first successful analysis for cancer treatment in Korea. Let's take a closer look.

Upon receiving information on a patient's condition and results of medical exams, the artificial intelligence program "Watson for Oncology" is asked to suggest a treatment method that can prevent the recurrence of the disease.
[Soundbite] Cho Tae-hyun(First Patient to be Treated by Watson for Oncology) : "I had doubts about it, because this should be done by humans. But I decided to trust the computer and undergo treatment."
In just a few seconds, Watson suggested that the best treatment method in this case is the anti-cancer chemotherapy called "Folfox," specifically predicting thesurvival rate over a period of three years. The answer fully coincides with the results of deliberations held by five cancer experts.
[Soundbite] Baek Jung-heum(Surgeon) : "We asked Watson to give its opinion, and it turnedout to coincide with our opinion 100 percent. It also presented a specific survival rate."
With more than a hundred cancer-related theses being released daily, it has become impossible for doctors to keep track of the latest medical knowledge. If Watson continues to evolve at its current pace, it will be able to analyze up to 85 percent of cancer cases by next year.
[Soundbite] Lee Eon(Gachon Univ. Gil Medical Center) : "In just one year, its abilities were on par withthose of an outstanding resident doctor. In about two years, it wasas good as a prominent professor."
The medical sector hopes that with the help of big data such as DNA sequencing analysis that is hard for humans to grasp intuitively, Watson will be able to evolve even faster.
