The third-generation WRX is here and in this video we’re going to discuss the design from the front to the side and of course the rear and then I’m going to redesign it.

Before we do that, let’s have a look at some of the spec and tech.

The 2022 Subaru WRX is powered by a 271-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four and adds a new GT model with adaptive dampers. You can get it with either a six-speed manual which is fantastic in this day and age or you can go with a paddle shift automatic.

It will go on sale early 2022 and pricing is yet to be announced. If you, like me, were hoping for a hatchback version of the new 2022 WRX, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s only being built as a sedan.

Now let’s talk about this new design.

Subaru played us a trick I’ve haven’t seen in a very long time, a trick I thought was long gone and played out.

The trick of showing us awesome concept cars for years leading up to the real thing only to find out they were just joking around.

For example we saw the Subaru WRX Concept from 2013. Very Clean and crisp design with lines that feel a lot more confident than what we see today in the 2022 production car.

Then we had the VIZIV STi Concept from 2018 which is clearly what the 2022 car should have looked like. Beefy, planted, modern and sharp with a clear Subaru design language both in graphics and proportions.

However, Instead of the headliner we ended up with the coverband.

I’ve received a few DMs asking to make a video on the new 2022 WRX and I'm happy to try and express my thoughts in this video today.

When I first saw it, I can’t say it blew me away. The design is a 2022 model but it feels more like a 2012.

I do kind of like the front view. It’s the view where the car looks the most modern and you can trace some graphic features back to the concept of 2018.

The rear doesn’t need a bumper anymore because we have a diffuser to fill in that space. The black fender flares make the wheels look even smaller than what they already are, like tiny bottle caps lost in a massive black hole and this becomes even more pronounced on a white car.

It doesn’t help that the shoulderline seems very confused and doesn't really know what to aim at or connect with.

I’m sure it’s a fantastic car to drive. The WRXs have always been fun drivers cars. However, for me, I like to know that I’m sitting inside something beautiful. That I’m doing my fellow drivers around me a service by driving past them, giving them the opportunity to admire the design I’m maneuvering.

Unfortunately that’s not going to happen with the 2022 WRX.

I do think that with some tweaks to this design, we can move it closer to the VIZIV Performance concept most importantly in the perception of width and over stance and planteness.
