NEWS: Giant mudslide rolls over Murcia, Spain - Extreme heatwave hits Greece and South Europe
On Tuesday, a severe storm shut down the airport of Palma on Mallorca. Now, on Wednesday evening, the major city of Murcia on the Iberian Peninsula was hit hard. A helicopter had to rescue a person trapped in a car. Additionally, a woman and her daughter had to be rescued from their vehicle by the fire department. Within an hour, 50.8 liters of rain fell, with 32.8 liters of it falling in just 20 minutes, according to the state weather service (AEMET). This is more than what usually falls during the entire summer in this dry region. Far too much in a short time.
Greece:
School closures and a call to work from home – Greek authorities have responded to the unusually early heatwave in Athens and other parts of the country. However, the many people working in Greece's important tourism sector cannot work from home or take time off despite temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius. Due to the scorching heat, it was decided to close the Acropolis in Athens for a few hours from noon onwards. As the Ministry of Culture initially announced for Wednesday and Thursday, Greece's most visited tourist attraction will not be accessible between 12:00 and 17:00 local time (11:00 to 16:00 CEST).
