With the introduction of direct payments to players through the program known as NIL (Name, Image and Likeness), college football changed forever. And the Oregon Ducks are right at the center of this revolution. Recently, J.D. Pickell of On3 Sports addressed the idea that the Ducks' draft success is solely due to the "unlimited NIL" provided by Phil Knight and Nike. It all started with a tweet from former college football coach and media commentator Rick Neuheisel suggesting that Knight was "buying" a team to win Oregon's first football national championship. Although there is no official program or tracking device to verify NIL payments to players, this idea has gained traction. However, Pickell argues that many took that statement literally, using it to criticize Oregon and its supposed "history" of buying players. While money is a factor, it is natural for any school to use its resources to improve its team and win championships. But there's more to this story than just money. Pickell points out that believing it's all about money ignores what Oregon has accomplished in recent years. It's not that they don't pay players, but by digging deeper into the success of the Ducks' brand and in recruiting and on the field, we find reasons why transfer and high school athletes are drawn to Eugene. First, these are competitive athletes who want to play against the best and win. Many aspire to take the next step to the NFL. These players look for any opportunity that brings them closer to playing on Sundays. Pickell points out that Oregon's success in securing two high-profile transfer quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore, can be attributed to Bo Nix's success in 2023. Yes, NIL money was involved, but on the field, Oregon has proven it can develop a quarterback chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft. Another point of success in recruiting is in the wide receivers room. In 2023, Oregon had two receivers who surpassed 1,000 yards: Tez Johnson and Troy Franklin. For a transfer player or a high school senior with NFL dreams, this is gold. Specifically, the Ducks landed Dakorien Moore, a consensus five-star recruit ranked No. 3 nationally, No. 1 wide receiver and No. 1 player in the state of Texas. Many believed Moore was committed to the Texas Longhorns, but he surprised everyone with his reasons for choosing Oregon. "The reason I chose Oregon is because I want to be different. I want to be part of something legendary," Moore said. "I see Coach (Dan) Lanning building a program that will win a national championship. I feel like (Oregon wide receivers coach) Junior Adams will develop me into the best wide receiver and man off the field, and the culture there is different above all." Speaking of Coach Dan Lanning, ignoring his relentless approach to recruiting and crediting only the NIL for player signings is disrespectful, Pickell said. In Moore's case, the NIL deal was in the spotlight, but that ignores the work Lanning and his coaches did in connecting with the young receiver, getting to know his family and, ultimately, giving Moore solid reasons to choose Oregon, as per mentioned above.
