(29 Feb 2020) Thousands of people marched through central Moscow on Saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of the killing of Boris Nemtsov, the Russian opposition leader who was shot dead five years ago.
Demonstrations in Nemtsov's memory also took place in cities across Russia, including St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Vladivostok.
Nemtsov was killed on 27 February 2015 as he walked along a bridge over the Moscow River next to the Kremlin.
He was widely seen as President Vladimir Putin's most charismatic and energetic opponent.
An officer in the security forces of Chechnya's Kremlin-backed leader was sentenced to 20 years for firing the shots that killed Nemtsov, while four other men were sentenced to 11 to 19 years for their involvement.
But who ordered the killing was never established.
The march in Moscow was also to protest the proposed constitutional changes that are seen as a way for Russian President Vladimir Putin to retain power once his term ends in 2024.
Placards carried by the crowd included "No to eternal Putin" and "No to the usurpation of power."
