Shinde’s rebellion and that he managed to wean away 40 MLAs and 13 MPs from Uddhav Thackeray sent shockwaves across the state and the country. While this wasn’t the first defection in the Sena, it was the first of its kind.
Unlike earlier defectors like Chhagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane and Raj Thackeray, who formed their own groups, Shinde claimed his stake over the party and ‘brand Shiv Sena’. By asserting that he was more eligible to own the cultural symbols of the Shiv Sena — the bhagwa (saffron) flag and the aggressive Hindutva — his group targeted the second and third generation Thackerays — Uddhav and Aaditya — for moving away from the real values of Shiv Sena.
As he tried to refashion the party and move away from its street-fighting ways, Uddhav lost touch with the common Shiv Sainik: bit.ly/3xCvLWg
