Bryggen is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's the old dockyards area of Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway. The district was built up by the Hanseatic League, a group of merchants and traders based in Lubeck, Germany. For several centuries they traded fish from northern Norway for grain from central Europe, and made themselves very rich in the process. Despite a series of fires and the pressure of a nearby modern city, Bryggen is still fantastically well preserved.
