The Great Lakes, A Group Of Five Freshwater Lakes Situated In North America, Forming A Large Part Of The International Boundary Between The United States Of America And Canada. Great Lakes Consist Of Five Lakes Which Are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie And Lake Ontario. These Five Lakes Are The Largest Group Of Freshwater Lakes In The World By Total Surface Area, Covering Approximately 244,400 Square Kilometres, And With A Total Water Volume Of 22,684 Cubic Kilometers, These Five Lakes Containes Roughly 21% Of The World's Surface Freshwater.
The Great Lakes Were Formed By The Retreat Of Glaciers During The Last Ice Age, About 14,000 Years Ago. As The Massive Ice Sheets Receded, They Carved Out Basins That Eventually Filled With Water, Creating The Great Lakes. The Great Lake Basin Covers Parts Of The Canadian Provinces Of Ontario And Quebec, As Well As Several U.S. States, Including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, And New York.
Lake Superior Is The Largest Of The Great Lakes By Surface Area And Volume, It Is The Largest Freshwater Lake By Surface Area In The World And The Third-largest By Volume After Lake Baikal And Lake Tanganyika, And Has A Total Water Volume Of 12,100 Cubic Kilometres. Lake Superior Contains As Much Water As All The Other Great Lakes Combined. Lake Huron, Lake Michigan And Lake Erie Are The Next Three Lakes By Area, While Lake Ontario Is The Smallest Of The Great Lakes Covering Roughly 19,000 Square Kilometers.
All The Great Lakes, Except Lake Michigan, Are Shared Between The United States Of America And Canada, Lake Michigan Is The Only Great Lake Situated Entirely Within The United States. Lake Michigan And Lake Huron Are Actually A Single Body Of Water And Are Connected By The Straits Of Mackinac. If We Consider It A Single Lake Then It Can Called As The Largest Freshwater Lake In The World, Bigger Than Lake Superior In Surface Area But Less Water Volume Than Lake Superior.
Lake Superior Is The Deepest Of The Great Lakes, With An Average Depth Of 483 Feet (147 Meters) And Has A Maximum Depth Of About 1,333 Feet (406 Meters), While Lake Erie Is The Shallowest Of The Great Lakes, With A Average Depth Of Only 62 Feet (19 Meters) And A Maximum Depth Of About 210 Feet (64 Meters).
The Area Surrounding The Great Lakes Is Home To Approximately 40 Million People, Various Major Cities Of Usa And Canada Are Situated In The Great Lakes Basin. Major Canadian Cities Such As, Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo , London, St. Catharines, Niagara, Windsor, And
U.S Cities Such Are Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Duluth, Toledo, Buffalo, And Rochester, Are Situated On The Shores Of Great Lakes.

It Covers An Total Surface Area Of 2,766 Km Square Kilometers. The Island Itself Has Over 100 Lakes, Some Of Which Contains Islands Of Their Own.
Even Though The Great Lakes Covers 244,400 Square Kilometres In Area, They Have Less Water Volume Than Lake Baikal, Which Covers Only 31,722 Square Kilometers, Lake Baikal Has An Total Water Volume Of 23,600 Square Kilometers, While The Combined Volume Of All Great Lakes Is 22,684 Cubic Kilometers.
