There are multiple “Ranges of Combat”. The ones I am talking about in this video, pertain to man to man (when I say man or men, I am talking about both genders).
One of the Ranges of Combat I briefly talk about is the PROJECTILE RANGE. This is where you use your firearm to shoot, and you can also throw something. Hence, the name “PROJECTILE”.
The next range is the “KICKING RANGE”. Your legs are longer than your arms. You can generally touch the person in front of you a lot faster and quicker with a swift and effective front kick. I love the “TEAP” kick that is often used in MUAY THAI Kickboxing, this kick has helped me many times in training and in real combat situations. It helps me get the person out of the way, create space, &/or take the person out of the fight. At this range Muay Thai Kick boxing can be used effectively.
The next range is the “PUNCHING RANGE”. This is the range that you can reach out and hit &/or grab the person in front of you with your hands. In between the “KICKING” and the “PUNCHING” range, you can ‘muzzle thump’ the person to your front with the muzzle of the rifle, or you can effectively strike the person with a baton (or whatever blunt instrument) that you may have in your hand. This is the range that whatever long object you have in your hand, you can use it as an extension of your limbs. As an operator, you cannot risk damaging your hands, that’s what you use to shoot your firearms. So, although a straight punch seems to be the most popular thing to do, the HAMMER FIST can serve to be very effective at delivering some heavy and damaging strikes. At this range having the knowledge of some boxing, Muay Thai Boxing, Filipino Martial Arts can be very effective.
The next range is the “CLINCH RANGE”. This is where you can clinch your opponent by pulling them in closer to you so that you can use other striking methods such as head butts, elbows, knees, shoulder bumps, etc… You can also take your opponent down in this range (Judo &/or Wrestling takedowns). Joint manipulation can be used in this range, when needing to lever the person into a certain position to arrest them. At this range having the knowledge of Muay Thai kickboxing, Filipino Martial Arts, Judo, Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, can be effective.
Another range is the GRAPPLING RANGE. This is on the ground getting into a position that you can effectively strike and/or arrest your opponent, by utilizing proper positioning, heavy pressure, leverage, joint manipulation, etc… At this range, the knowledge of Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu can be very effective.
Training and having a good understanding in each range of combat can be an invaluable tool for the outcome of your survival, and overall mission accomplishment. As a Special Forces Operator, having this knowledge and training in each range of combat, keeps us in the fight no matter what situation we may find ourselves in.
