Tianjin Protests
Hundreds of people in China are in protest after two large explosions at a warehouse last Wednesday. They say the warehouse was built illegally close to their homes. It also stored hundreds of tonnes of a highly toxic chemical. This is more than the legal limit China allows. The explosion killed 114 people, wounded 700 and displaced a further 63 hundred.
PKK Asks US for Mediation
One of the leaders of the PKK’s umbrella organisation, KCK, Cemil Bayik says the PKK would only accept a ceasefire if the US were to mediate it. He says the PKK has spoken indirectly with Washington. US, Turkey and the EU list the PKK as a terrorist organisation. Another leader of the KCK, Zubeyir Aydar, asked the US to help in ‘de-escalation’ with Turkey earlier this month. This July, the PKK announced it had ended its ceasefire with the Turkish government that had begun in 2013. Since July 11th, PKK militants and members of its youth wing have reportedly killed at least 44 security officers. And the Turkish military has been launching air strikes on several ISIS and PKK positions in Syria and northern Iraq since the end of July.
Voting Underway
Sri Lankans have begun voting for their next prime minister. They’re choosing between incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Party … and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party of former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa . The current president, Maithripala Sirisena defeated Rajapaksa in elections in January. Sirisena called the early vote because he’s been unable to pass legislation in parliament. A local election monitor says voters have turned out in high numbers.
Plane Debris Spotted
Search teams have spotted debris in the district of Oksibil. They say it may belong to the Trigana Air Service plane that crashed on Sunday. 54 people were on board. The plane lost contact with air traffic control over the Papua region shortly after taking off from Jayapura's Sentani Airport. Soon afterward villagers in the area reported a crash.
