I have a deep abiding love for Jazzmasters, so it makes my day whenever I get to play an outstanding example like this 1959 Wildwood 10 from Masterbuilder Dennis Galuszka. It has the sort of attack that I daydream about: raunchy, growly, aggressive, and articulate, but with enough woodiness that it never sounds harsh. After the initial attack, the note blooms in a lovely way. In all pickup positions, the trebles are glorious. High notes have a clear, pure, crystalline quality that reminds me of Tom Verlaine's tone on Television's Marquee Moon. Full chords also have incredible jangle and sparkle. The midrange has plenty of bite in the bridge position, and it has a broader, throatier quality in the neck position. The lows sound defined and woody in both positions, and the neck pickup has satisfying oomph. Anyone seeking a spectacular Jazzmaster will love this serial!
