Aminoglycosides come under the category of bacterial protein synthesis inhibitors and are bactericidal. They are natural or semisynthetic antibiotics with polybasic amino group in their structure. Their mechanism of action may be described in two main steps:
(a) Transport of the aminoglycoside through the bacterial cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane.
(b) Binding to ribosomes resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis.
