This is an easy solution to the problem of steep steps in old houses, as well as help for people with mobility issues. The steps are movable so they can be stored away and brought out only when needed.
1) The steps are the small IKEA "Knagglig" wooden storage boxes. The size used is 9x12 ¼x6 and it's easy to reduce it to a 3" height just by cutting the 4 corner braces with a hand saw. Cost: $15 per step at Ikea
2) "Anti Slip Tape" on top for traction (Amazon)
3) "SlipToGrip" non slip furniture pads on the bottom on each corner (Amazon)
To be clear ... this is not my invention. Several companies make similar step configurations (both portable and permanent) but they are very expensive. As an example, one company sells a 14 step package for $700. The DIY cost for the 14 steps described here is under $300.
