In chapter two le Bon elaborates on the means of persuasion of the leaders of crowds, prestige is one of them. For it to be such powerful a force, crowds have to first be mentally conditioned to be easily swayed therewith. Education is of the biggest weapons that can influence the minds of the populace. It is meant to lay the groundwork of dumbness by which all potential persuasive means can take great effect.
You might go as far as to deny this force and claim it effective only on the naive. However, you may have been mesmerized by prestige in the past without your knowing. You might have once felt yourself reacting in a way inauthentic to your will at the presence of somebody merely because you knew he was a billionaire, well-known artist or someone of good looks. (although I'm a big believer in inner-game) His gaze, the way he carries himself, even his clothes had made some petrifying effect on you, which resulted in the steering of your behavior. On a bigger scale, we see the same concept exercised to propagate certain political dogmas unto the masses. This is what I wanted to call your attention on today.
A pleasure to share,
- Chadi (The journey)
