President John Fry touts Drexel's strong civic engagement and yet this is how Drexel interacts with the surrounding community. President Fry's legacy both at Drexel and Penn demonstrate his commitment to property over people. He continues to employ gentrification tactics to fulfill his expansionist agenda, including large increases in police and surveillance budgets.
On May 31st, 2020, Philadelphia Police in concert with Drexel University Police and University of Pennsylvania Police terrorized residents surrounding 52nd Street in West Philadelphia. They indiscriminately fired tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets at protestors and bystanders. The NAACP has entered into litigation with the City of Philadelphia and the Drexel Community Lawyering Clinic is petitioning the UN Human Rights Commission to get this police violence on 52nd street formally recognized as an abuse of civil and human rights.
Investigative journalism continues to shed light on Drexel and Penn's disturbing role in this violence. Why were these private, campus police forces facilitating this violence and why do they face no repercussions?
