It is estimated that around one billion people around the world have a mental health ill-ness. With anxiety being the most common, affecting 284 million people,
or, 1 in 5 persons.
Unfortunately, regardless of its prevalence and rise, the stigma surrounding mental
health remains firmly entrenched. With many still regarding and seeing mental health as a blemish or stain against an individual. Treating them differently, or in a negative way, and making them feel ashamed and worthless.
For stigma is the result of misunderstanding, of ignorance and of prejudice.
We need to learn awareness. To talk openly, to educate ourself and others
and to encourage equality. To show compassion, understanding, and to choose
empowerment over shame.
For we all need to work together to dispel the myths and break the stigma of
mental health illness.
For we are all human beings, part of the human family.
