STORYLINE:
A woman suspected of involvement in a bombing at a St. Petersburg cafe that killed a Russian military blogger appeared in court on Monday in Moscow.
Moscow's City court will consider an appeal against the arrest of 26-year-old Darya Trepova, who is charged with terrorism after an attack at a St. Petersburg cafe that killed Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, an ardent supporter of the special military operation in Ukraine who filed daily reports on the fighting from the front lines.
Tatarsky, 40, was killed Sunday as he led a discussion at the riverside cafe in the historic heart of St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city.
Russian authorities described the bombing as an act of terrorism and blamed Ukrainian intelligence agencies for orchestrating the attack.
Police arrested Trepova in connection with the incident.
Trepova was arrested in St. Petersburg but her case was sent to Moscow, where the headquarters of the country’s top investigative agencies are located, in an apparent reflection of its high priority.
In a closed-door hearing at the beginning of April, Moscow's Basmanny District Court ordered Trepova to remain in custody until June 2 pending an investigation.
Russian law foresees a life sentence for terrorism-related crimes, but life terms aren't handed down to women who could instead face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
