A common issue i have had the pleasure to repair recently. A client asked me if I could have a look at the instrument cluster on their Ford Focus MK2.5. The fault was causing the dials to go to zero, all the warning lights to illuminate and the car going in to limp mode. A light tap on the top of the dash board would fix it temporarily. This was happening whilst driving so not only was it a nuisance, it was dangerous.
They already removed the instrument cluster from the car so it was up to me to repair. After hearing about the issue, it was clear it was a bad connection somewhere.
After looking at the PCB under the microscope, I could instantly see broken solder joints on the back of the main connector. These broken joints were tiny and nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye.
Checking over the rest of the board revealed nothing else out of the ordinary so I set to work re-soldering all the joints on the main connector. After handing back to the customer, they fitted it all back in the car, tested it and confirmed the issue is now permanently fixed.
In this video, I have shown before and after videos of cleaning up and applying solder to the connections on the back of the main connector. Unfortunately I didn't video the soldering part but it shows before and after the repair.
