The TEFL certificates from the agency/company below are routinely being accepted by the Shenzhen, China government agencies charged with granting work/residency permits/visas to foreigners. An HR manager at one of China's largest English schools indicated that it's well (and favourably) known to the officials who make the decision on your application. And sure enough I used it after the requirement came into effect and I watched as the local visa officer glanced over it and then approved my application. It's no big deal, the course is cheap and you'd might as well have one as everyone else does.

The course was $190 USD when I did it and it included one hundred and twenty (120) hours of material. It won't take nearly that long to do it however. Actually I felt that the course will provide a good grounding in the minimum of grammar you should know if you want to teach English in China. Actually, you could get away with less for sure if you're otherwise very likeable to the students.
I recommend that you at least have a strong handle on the different parts of speech in English before starting. This means the difference between nouns, verbs, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives etc..
Do professional language teachers in the US actually bother with TEFL (or TESOL) certificates? No, they don't. Most US professors have no interest in a TEFL certification. Regardless, of whether it's a "Cambridge Certificate" or any other brand of silliness. My BA is in Chinese (1993) and I can tell you that serious language teachers are more concerned with a PhD in a particular language and then moving on from there. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) are terms which are popular mainly within the overseas teaching industry. They are not really something that serious language teachers/scholars at established institutions of higher education in modern countries, such as the United States, are seriously interested in.
