Earlier this year I was experimenting with shooting various types of pellets into clay blocks. What I found was that unlike ballistics putty that expanded and then contracted, the clay held the shape of the resulting impact shockwave. While the consistency of clay is not that of game, it does provide some insight in how effective, or ineffective, certain ammo may be out of a given rifle. My test rifle is the Sumatra 2500 and it can go from very low power to very high power by simply rotating the power wheel. This makes it extremely useful in this kind of testing. As a note, this type of experiment is something anyone can do at home with the proper safety precautions in place, i.e. always have an appropriate backstop, use safety glasses, and ear protection if required.
