Reclaiming their community! Nicholtown residents are taking action to reduce crime and improve the lives of families in their neighborhood.
The goal: save kids by surrounding them - and their families - with support.
Neighborhood leaders enlisted the help of South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Greenville Police Department and dozens of service providers through a $112,800 federal grant.
Greenville Police crime analysis shows the majority of crime in Nicholtown (and other city neighborhoods) is committed by a very small group of people. The influence of that small group can have a broad reach and a devastating impact.
Project safe neighborhoods will help families with things like rent or mortgage assistance, transportation, enrollment in after school activities, tutoring, mentoring, job training, healthcare, mental health treatment and more.
Family stability = neighborhood safety. Officers want to be there as a last resort. Making arrests when attempts to point children in the right direction have been unsuccessful.
The City of Greenville's Loren Thomas and Cameron Williams participated in the Project Safe Neighborhood kickoff. They will provide in depth coverage over the next weeks and months as the program progresses.
