Have you ever said something to someone with the intention of trying to help them, only to have it completely backfire, and now they’re more upset than before? Today, we go over how dementia affects language skills and how to adapt your words to avoid trigger phrases.
As we mentioned in the previous video, a lot of communication is based on how your words are being interpreted and not on the actual words you are saying. Because of that it’s very easy to say what you think is right and end up in a world of trouble as your person’s damaged brain struggles to interpret what you said. Fortunately, it is just as easy to tweak your language to get the results you want—it just takes practice. Worry not however, as we always say here on the channel, “Together we can.”
Many of the examples in this video relate to accidentally treating your person with dementia like a baby, and what adult wants that? There are more examples that can be found in our roleplay videos, as well as in our video on comforting someone with dementia. Regardless of the situations presented in the video, the tools and techniques shown are essential in navigating life as a caregiver.
In this video, we talk about how to avoid trigger phrases like “calm down”, or “I’m just trying to help.” Phrases like these can make your person with dementia feel belittled and will likely make them resistant to your help. Instead, try asking for permission before continuing. We also talked about some alternatives to words such as “bib” and “diaper”. For a more complete list of alternative phrases, be sure to check out our website or pick up a copy of our book. Or Both! The information will be immensely helpful to you either way.
