The medieval fortress and the Church of St. James, are frozen in time.
A significant part of these fortifications and the city wall with ten towers were erected in the 14th century, and already in the 16th century, Rothenburg began to be called the "Franconian Jerusalem" because of the silhouette that the city acquired thanks to the numerous towers. Most of the gates and towers feature a shield with two red towers as a symbol of Rothenburg, and a black eagle on a yellow background is the sign of the Holy Roman Empire, which indicates to visitors that they are entering the Free Imperial City, which Rothenburg was from 1274 until the 1802 year did not become part of the kingdom of Bavaria.
