ORIGINAL INFO: Got any China Cat? How about some A-Train? How about a better comic?
RUMINATIONS: The first two issues were bad enough, but you could understand it to a degree – trying to separate Roy from his friends and loved ones by letting his rage and sorrow get the better of him, his desire to retreat into drug use to escape it all… but it’s in THESE issues where it all becomes hilariously stupid. My rant against Roy in the episode was probably too harsh given his loss, but I stand by what I said from a NARRATIVE perspective – regardless of what happens in real life, it’s a piece of fiction. And the writing has not yet given us a reason to sympathize with Roy’s situation and never attempts to redeem him. It’s just an attempt to turn him into an anti-hero, which he remains today (just with a stupid hat). Recent solicits for the DC crossover Convergence hint at a potential happy ending, but who knows if it’ll actually come to pass.
That being said, this IS still hilarious in how badly-botched this all is. Impotence, hallucinating that a dead cat is his daughter, Batman kicking him in the face while saying he’s his friend, and of course: zombie ghost Lian Harper.
Some Previously On segments I like more than others since they flow so well into each other or are just so absurd and hilarious. This one isn’t one of the best. Part of the problem I think is that when I don’t script them out, it’s a grab-bag whether they’ll actually flow into one another well and the only direction I give the reviewers for what they’ll do is “do something weird and soap opera-esque and dramatic.” So most of the time it’s that someone is pregnant or they’ll do something like Kyle did… which ended the segment well, but it’s a bit of slog to get there.
