Derawar Fort | 9th century AD. Built | Rai Jajja Bhati | Hindu Rajput Ruler
Explore the captivating history of Derawar Fort with its roots dating back to the 9th century AD. Built by Rai Jajja Bhati, a Hindu Rajput ruler, this fortress stands as a tribute to Emperor Rawal Deoraj Bhati of Jaisalmer and the residents of Bahawalpur. Originally known as Dera Rawal, it transformed over time into Derawar, its present name.
Situated approximately 20 km south of Ahmedpur East in the Cholistan Desert, Derawar Fort boasts forty bastions, visible for miles around. The massive walls, standing up to thirty meters high, form a perimeter of 1500 meters. The Cholistan Desert, a part of the Thar Desert in modern Pakistan, holds archaeological evidence of an ancient Indus Valley culture that once thrived in the region, utilizing the Hakra River for their agricultural lifestyle.
Despite environmental changes rendering the area inhospitable, Derawar Fort perseveres as the best surviving structure among the dozen fort ruins in the region. In the 18th century, the fort transitioned into the hands of Muslim Nawabs of Bahawalpur from the Shahotra tribe. Its current form, after renovations in 1732 by Abbasi ruler Nawab Sadeq Muhammad, has stood the test of time.
