This video shows a quick version of the lunar eclipse that occurred on the night of September 27, 2015.
The lunar eclipse coincided with the a full moon that was close to earth due to the moon's elliptical orbit. The redness of the moon comes from the fact that shorter wavelengths of light (green, blue, violet, etc) that come from the sun are partially filtered out when the earth comes in between the moon and the sun, casting it's shadow and edges of light onto the moon's surface. The light essentially seeps through our atmosphere (i.e. the circumference or circular edge of earth) and hit the moon's surface. This is the same phenomenon that gives our sky a bright blue at noon and red-orange glow at sunset. It's like watching a sunset reflecting off of the moon.
