Jason J. Luke, MD, FACP, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, discusses adjuvant therapy for high-risk melanoma. Approved treatments include PD-1 and BRAF inhibitors for stage 3 melanoma. Recent research has shown that stage 2 patients are at a similar level of risk of 5- and 10-year survival to stage 3 patients. KEYNOTE-716 has led the way for PD-1, BRAF, and MEK inhibitors being used in adjuvant therapy for patients with stage 2 melanoma. Dr Luke recommends that future research focuses on how to refine and increase the benefit of adjuvant treatment for these patient populations.
