This video shows a progress map of the popular vote by state and electoral votes for the 2020 USA election.
When electing a president, you are voting for electors who will cast ballots on your behalf for president and vice president.
The United States election starts on November 3rd, but the official decision does not happen until the electoral college meets mid-December to officially vote. Often certain news sources try to call the race based on statistical probability of winning. If a news source calls the race, it is not official.
As an example of calling a state wrong ahead of the electoral college vote, this year Arizona was called to be a Biden win on November 4th at 2am by the associated press. With 14% of the vote remaining on November 4th at 9:44 PM, Biden had a lead of 79k but on November 6th at 3 PM with 10% remaining, he only had a 41k lead. On November 7th at 11pm Trump only had a 19K lead. The switch from Red to Blue in Arizona after the news sources declared a victor did not change the outcome of the election due to Arizona only having 11 electoral votes.
The outcome of an election may seem final in the news, but it is not official until the official electoral college vote happens. A majority (270) of electoral votes or more is required for the Electoral College to elect the president. [ Ссылка ]
One problem with the electoral college is that a few states do not have laws against “faithless electors”. This happens when the appointed person to vote does not vote for the popular vote of the state.
The election in 2020 took a long time to decide due to voting by mail and not counting ballots until the 3rd. President Trump claimed that there would be absentee ballot fraud and that lead more Republicans to vote in person than by mail. The votes that came in on the key swing states, Georgia and Pennsylvania, came in over 70% in favor of Biden in the final days of counting mail in ballots.
Many states are looking to move the electoral college voting to be in line with the countries popular vote. Once they have enough states to form a coalition of 270 electoral votes, the electoral college will not matter in the future. [ Ссылка ]
