Commissioned to write about an area of Lisbon for this collection, Catarina Fonseca chooses the very centre of the city on the night of a wild rainstorm. When her lonely narrator dives into the ancient Santa Justa lift to shelter, she finds herself on an unexpectedly magical journey.

Author bio
Catarina Fonseca is a writer and journalist from Lisbon. She began writing very young, publishing novels for young people which won several prizes. She also writes novels for adults, essays and short stories. Her most recent novel, published in 2018, is ‘Maria do Castelo’.

Translator bio
Rachael is a playwright, prose writer and literary translator from French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. She has won the Gate Theatre Translation Award and twice been shortlisted for the Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize. Her first novel, Fair Trade Heroin, was published by Dedalus in 2022.
