In this short, I will show you how I clone my Japanese Bloodgood maples. Acer Palmatum var Bloodgood. I first get a container and fill it to about 2 inches with very Sandy and damp soil. then I get my cutting off of my tree and separate them. I then dip the end of the cutting in a rooting hormone and plant it in the soil. I place it outdoors in a shady area. in about 2 months you should start seeing roots forming. a good indication that roots are forming is that you will see leaves sprouting out. keep the soil moist but not soaking the entire time.
