Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel, addresses the general debate of the 75th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 22 – 29 September 2020).
Hailing Israel’s recent peace agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today (29 Sep) said, “for far too long the Palestinians wielded a veto on peace between Israel and the broader Arab world” and all progress was halted and held hostage by completely unrealistic Palestinian demands.”
In a video address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, Netanyahu said “the expanding circle of peace will not make an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians less likely; it will make peace between Israelis and Palestinians more likely. Palestinian leaders will increasingly realize that they no longer have a veto over peace and progress in our region. And hopefully those leaders will ultimately decide to make peace with the Jewish state. And when that happens, Israel will be ready. I will be ready. And I'd be willing to negotiate on the basis of the Trump plan to end our conflict with the Palestinians once and for all."
Turning to relations with Iran, the Israeli Prime Minister commended US President Donald Trump for withdrawing “from the flawed nuclear deal with Iran.”
Netanyahu said,” I oppose it because the nuclear deal did not block Iran’s path to the bomb, it actually paved its way to it. I oppose it because the deals restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme were only temporary and were in no way tied to Iran’s change of behaviour.”
He said, “thankfully President Trump recognized the disastrous nuclear deal for what it was, and he acted. He restored US sanctions, forced countries to choose between doing business with America or doing business with Iran and took out the world’s most dangerous terrorist Qassem Suleimani.”
The Israeli Prime Minister also presented a map allegedly showing the site of a Hezbollah explosives depot near a gas company and a residential area in Lebanon and warned of the potential for another deadly explosion.
Netanyahu‘s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
