Some tips I've picked up over many years of using various saddle bags. The size of the bag really depends on the type of riding you do. The really small bags sometimes don't offer enough room and a REALLY large bag for shorter trips just looks silly.
99% of most roadside mechanicals are simple flat tires. The longer and further away from a ride, the more items you may want to carry.
For my day to day commuting, I keep extra tubes and a small frame pump in my backpack.
Historically I average 7000-10000 miles per year and for the last several years, my best saddle bag lasted about 3. The bags that attach using only velcro straps tend to work loose and start falling off over time. I like bags with a locking strap that also goes over the zipper to keep the bag from accidentally working it's way open. I like to keep my bag as small as I can fit all the essential items. These include:
- Inner tube (powdered up in a bag) with a removable core.
- Co2 cartridges (2) and a small dispenser. (I'll use sections of old cut up inner tubes slid over the cartridges to keep them quiet and not as cold when operating)
- Tire levers
- Tire boots to repair cuts in tires (glueless patches, old tire sections, heavy denim material, Etc.
- Valve extenders and a valve core and extender tool.
That's my basic essential list. Additional items would be more tubes and Co2 cartridges and a nice multi tool, as well as a chain quick link.
Some folks prefer a mini pump as the sole inflation device but I like the Co2 inflators, especially in a group ride setting when lots of folks are waiting around. If you've had bad luck in the past or are intimidated, it's worthwhile to use a few cartridges for practice and try some different dispenser types to find one that works for you. I like the Bontrager air rush Co2 inflator and 16 gram cartridges.
A couple of other tips: Always remember to zip up your bag after you've completed your repair (I've left min open a few times only to loose all my tools). Also switch out or at least check your spare inner tube every 6 months - annually as even with the best packing job, tubes can develop cracks or wear spots from vibrations, hot/cold seasonal changes Etc.
