The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Thursday that an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) found a "debris field" in the designated search area near the Titanic. Experts are currently evaluating the findings.
Earlier that morning, a robot from a Canadian vessel reached the sea floor near the Titanic to begin the search for the submarine. French authorities also deployed a robot from their vessel on the same day as part of the extensive international search efforts for the 21-foot sub Titan.
In addition to the underwater robots, search planes and ships have been deployed in the northern Atlantic Ocean, approximately 900 nautical miles from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The search area is said to be about twice the size of Connecticut.
The submarine was launched from a Canadian research vessel on Sunday, but contact was lost with the Titan during the dive after one hour and 45 minutes. It was known that the sub had a limited amount of oxygen onboard, which was expected to last until Thursday morning.
