Knowing the credit rating of a stock can be very useful in determining the quality of a stock. When you're analyzing dividend growth stocks, the stock credit rating from one of the big 3 credit rating agencies can supplement your research.
When you watch the video, you'll quickly understand the importance of credit rating when it comes to stocks. You see, in order to fund growth and new projects, companies need to raise money.
While they can do like you and me and go to the bank, a better way to raise capital is to release bonds. These bonds require companies to pay interest to bond investors.
The amount of interest is determined by the credit rating given by these agencies. The better the company, the higher its credit rating, the lower the interest they will have to pay on those bonds.
When I started investing, I would've loved to have credit rating agencies explained. It would have prevented me from making many investing mistakes! I also wish I knew how to check the credit rating of a company...

Their credit ratings go from AAA (or Aaa for Moody's) for Prime quality stocks such as Johnson & Johnson and Microsoft (which are the only two stocks at the moment with the best credit rating) all the way to CCC/Caa2. Those are considered junk bonds, so it is not advisable to invest in companies with such poor credit ratings.
