Welcome back to ‘The Bible Says What?!?!’. Today I will summarize Exodus chapter 8, where Moses wrote about his dealings with Pharaoh. Moses began, ‘The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh and tell him to let my people go. Tell him if he does not, I will send a plague of frogs.’ So Moses did what God commanded him. Pharaoh didn’t let the people go, so God sent frogs. There were so many frogs in the land, they even got into everyone’s ovens and food bowls. Pharaoh’s magicians were able to do the same thing. But the frogs were too much. Pharaoh said, ‘ok I’ll let the people go, just get rid of the frogs’. Moses said, ‘So you may know there is no one like the Lord, He wants you to pick the day. What day do you want the frogs to go away?’ Pharaoh said, ‘tomorrow’. So tomorrow came, and all the frogs died. The Egyptians piled them up in the land and they decayed. But then Pharaoh hardened his heart and changed his mind. He did not let the people go.
The Lord said to Moses, ‘go to Pharaoh and tell him I am sending gnats’. So he did. Gnats came up on all the land and irritated all the people. The magicians tried to do the same thing, but this time they couldn’t. They told Pharaoh, ‘this must be the hand of God. We can’t duplicate this’. But Pharaoh hardened his heart again, and didn’t let the people go.
The Lord said to Moses, ‘go to Pharaoh. Tell him I am sending flies. But tell him this time I am not going to send them where My people live. I am going to show that I put a distinction between My people and his people’. So he did. Flies were everywhere, except for the land of Goshen. The land was laid waste because of the flies. Pharaoh said, ‘ok, Moses. You can sacrifice to your God but just do it where you are. Get rid of the flies.’ Moses said, ‘Our God will not allow us to compromise with you. He gave us His command and we will obey Him. Anyway, we cannot worship the Lord while the rest of the Egyptians watch. They will be offended and they will want to stone us all to death’. Pharaoh said, ‘ok, just don’t go very far into the wilderness. Just get rid of the flies.’ Moses said, ‘I will pray to the Lord, and perhaps He will remove the flies. Just don’t lie to me again.’ Then Moses prayed and the Lord removed the flies from the land. But Pharaoh did lie. He hardened his heart again and did not let the people go.
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that up until this point, He allowed both His people and the Egyptians to endure the plagues. But then He made a distinction between His people and the Egyptian people when He sent the flies. God wants us to know that in this chapter, it seems to indicate that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. That’s different than the last chapter, where it says God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Pharaoh was fully accountable for his own actions, and God did the hardening. The mystery remains. And God wants us to see that He did not want His people to compromise with the world back in Moses’ day, and He does not want His people to compromise with the world today.
Are you compromising with the wicked world? Stand strong with the people of God and reject compromise. Repent for your sin, and place your faith in Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross as my substitute, and your substitute, and God raised Jesus from the dead. We broke God’s law. Jesus paid our fine. He also conquered hell and death, and His return is near. God said if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that He raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
