I’ve always had it pretty easy
But I never knew I had it easy
I never knew that there is a girl somewhere
who is just like me
the only difference is
the color of her skin and
the neighborhood she lives in
the only difference is that the system is designed
for her to fail
just so I can succeed.

What if that girl is even smarter than me
What if she can go change the world
Make it a better place
While I sit around thinking
that the whole world belongs to me

I’ve always had it pretty easy
and now I know why
Because my school wouldn't let anyone drop out
they wouldn't let anyone fail
Not going to college was never an option.
It never crossed my mind whether or not my family could afford it
or if my school offered the classes I needed to even submit my application,
No one ever asked me if I was going to college,
They only asked me where.

But another girl out there, who is just as smart as me
gets left behind and lost
In a system that will only let kids like her fail
They will only let kids like her drop out
Not going to college was the only option.
She can’t afford it, her school doesn't offer the classes she needs
No one asks her anything about it at all.

This girl just like me
Is just a few miles down the road
right over the border of my middle class, suburban town
In our neighboring city
The kind of city that parents lock the car doors when we drive through
The kind of city that we associate with crime and drugs
But really, it is the kind of city that should be associated with
All that is wrong with the Public Education System
A failure factory

Its not their fault,
and truly its not my fault
I wish this wasn’t the way it was
And I don’t want to feel guilty for where I am today
But I do feel guilty, because opportunities were given to me
for the wrong reasons
They were given because I am white
I am middle class
I am exactly the person that the Education System is designed to help succeed.
