Ever wonder how some buildings stay upright during an earthquake? Here's a look at how some structures are built or retrofitted to withstand the violent shaking. Pioneer Courthouse in downtown Portland, for example, uses a “base isolation system.” In the event of an earthquake the building will sway gently back and forth, kind of like a pendulum.
