Following her first Tosca in Rio - immediately after her final
curtain calls - Callas was called to the directors office and
informed that, because of what he termed the "adverse audience
reaction", she would be relieved of all further performances. Callas
was livid and insisted on being paid for the remaining Tosca and two
Traviatas. The director, Barretto Pinto, relented and let her sing
the Traviatas - predicting sarcastically that no one would want to
see her.
Both Traviatas were sell outs, but when she come to his office for
the final settlement, Pinto goaded her suggesting he shouldn't pay
her anything, Callas picked up an ink stand to throw at him, but her
husband, Meneghini, prevented any bloodshed.
However, to complete Callas's humiliation her replacement at the next
performance of Tosca turned out to be Renata Tebaldi. This inevitably
brought their onetime friendship to an abrupt end.
