On 4th June 1942, Adolf Hitler met with the Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, the Commander of the Finnish armed forces. Hitler's visit to Mannerheim in Finland was a secret one, and coincided with Mannerheim's 75th birthday. The pair met on Mannerheim's train.
Unbeknownst to the speakers, the first eleven minutes of the conversation between Mannerheim and Hitler were recorded by a Finnish sound engineer, Thor Damen. Thor Damen had been assigned to record Mannerheim's birthday proceeding.
No other recordings of Hitler speaking in an informal tone are known to exist.
The recording is known as the "Hitler and Mannerheim Recording".
This video features an AI translated version of the Hitler and Mannerheim recording. Samples of Hitler's and Mannerheim's voice were provided to AI software. The voices were spliced, and combined with ambient sound from the original recording. The result is an interesting, informal glimpse into a complex man known by the world as a monster. Being able to hear Hitler's voice in English, rather than in German with English subtitles, provides English-only speakers with unprecedented immersion into this historically important conversation.
Note: The original recording includes a third speaker. This third speaker, who only addresses Mannerheim and Hitler in passing, has not been included in the translation.
