Fabrizio Nestola, head of department of Geosciences at University of Padova, describes a recent discovery published in "Nature" ("Water input into the Mariana subduction zone estimated from ocean-bottom seismic data"). The research shows that water can reach a depth of 30 km into the Pacific tectonic plate at the Mariana trench.
