We met with Mudang Jenn, a Korean Mudang, who guides us through Chuseok's history and traditions. Together, let's explore the cultural significance of our yearly celebration.

Chuseok (추석), also known as Hangawi (한가위) is a centuries-old harvest festival celebrated in both Koreas and within the larger Korean diaspora. It is observed on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar (typically between late September/early October) and is closely related to other mid-autumn festivals celebrated by cultures that mark the end of the harvest season. The holiday has roots in Korea’s agrarian customs of old, but continues to serve as a reminder today for us to venerate our connection to nature, spirits, and our ancestors.

A major national holiday in Korea—akin to Thanksgiving in North America—families from all over the country gather to share food, visit ancestral villages, and for some, carry out ancestral rites known as Jesa. Elaborate ritual food and drink are prepared as offerings for the departed, and prayers are delivered to maintain connections between the past and present. Not a religious event, Chuseok emphasizes gratitude for the harvest and reverence for our families. It remains a cherished tradition for Koreans around the globe, uniting them with the generations who came before.
