Lesson 1 - Tattooing health & Safety [or How not to die through Tattooing]
Hi. Im Helen at Tattoo Spark and Welcome to today's lesson on tattooing health and safety - or how not to die through tattooing .
As a tattoo artist, it's important to take every precaution to protect both yourself and your clients from the spread of disease.
In the beginning you should only be tattooing on fake skin but it’s important to understand health and safety right from the start
1 - Bloodborne Diseases & Tattooing
Tattooing can easily spread bloodborne diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV.
That's why it's important to always use a new set of disposable equipment for each client.
Hepatitis B and C are a particular concern for tattoo artists as they are not easily killed by sterilisation and spread easily by blood contamination.
Hep C caused 14,242 deaths in 2019 ALONE IN THE USA
It's important to keep your workspace clean and sterile and cover frequent touch points with barrier film.
Use a medical-grade disinfectant to clean your workstation between clients.
LESSON 1 Part 2 - Diseases Can Spread Easily
Let's start by demonstrating how easily diseases can spread during Tattooing.
Lets imagine this paint on my gloves is bacteria or a virus.
If you have paint on your gloves, you can easily transfer it onto high contact items such as your phone or a door handle.
The next person who picks up that phone is contaminated. This is why it's important to always wear gloves and only touch your client and your machine and workstation.
Make sure to change your gloves frequently, especially if you need to touch anything outside of your workstation.
3 - What are the best gloves for tattooing? You might be surprised.
Gloves are an essential part of tattooing health and safety. Always wear gloves when tattooing and make sure they fit properly. Well fitting gloves help you grip the skin better and are less likely to tear.
Nitrile gloves are best. They are less likely to tear and wont give you or your client the allergies you can get from latex gloves.
If you need to reach for something like new cartridges, you need to remove your gloves and get new ones.
This ensures that you don't contaminate your gloves and spread any potential diseases around. You should also avoid touching your face or any other part of your body while wearing gloves.
4 - Does Bleach Sterilize Tattoo Equipment?
Contrary to popular belief, Bleach or boiling doesn't sterilise needles, tubes or grips . Hepatitis can still survive this.
so it's important to use a fully disposable set up. This means using disposable needles, tubes, grips and everything.
I recommend just using needle cartridges [no tubes or grips needed].
If you're fully disposable, you don't need an expensive autoclave. Make sure to dispose of your used equipment properly and safely.
Obviously. You should also use a new set of equipment for each client to avoid cross-contamination.
5 - What to do if you prick yourself whilst Tattooing
Finally, always tattoo under the assumption that any human you tattoo is carrying a bloodborne disease. Use all precautions possible to protect yourself and your client.”
If you do get a needlestick injury. Where you manage to prick yourself with the tattoo needle whilst tattooing a human client, you need to go to A&E right away.
They can give you anti viral drugs to lower the risk of developing a disease.
Remember, taking these precautions is essential for the health and safety of both yourself and your client.”
In the next video were going to talk about what basic equipment you need to start tattooing.
