Analyzing and fixing the Park Distance Control on my 2003 Volvo XC70.
The PDC was disabled ever since I bought the car, it would beep continuously whenever the car was in reverse. I first thought this was because the sensors were picking up the towing hook, but I later learned that this could also be caused by a faulty sensor.
The way to check this is by first making sure PDC is on, then putting the key in the II position and the car in reverse (without the engine running). Then put your ear near each sensor and listen closely. A ticking sensor is a good sensor.
In my case, the third sensor from the left was bad. Unfortunately you have to remove the rear bumper to get access to sensor.
First remove the battery, always disconnect the negative terminal first.
Undo the four nuts that attach the bumper to the chassis, be careful not to lose them.
Undo the T25 torx screw in the wheel well behind the rear wheel on each side, then screw it back in three turns.
Drill out the rivet on the bottom of the bumper behind the rear wheel.
Push the bumper to the front of the car, then pull each side of the bumper outward to clear the rest of the body, then push the bumper to the rear to disconnect it.
Be careful of wiring, the wires of the sensor are long enough, but make sure to feed them through the chassis before putting the bumper on the ground.
Pry out the old sensor using a small screwdriver to disconnect the connector, and pull it out with a pair of pliers.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
This fixed it for me. Other possible causes may be chafed wiring or a busted control unit.
