(15 Nov 2018) Rival lawmakers have exchanged blows in Sri Lanka's Parliament as the disputed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed the speaker had no authority to remove him from office by voice vote.
The fighting in the chamber came a day after it passed a no-confidence vote against Rajapaksa's government.
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, coalition party leader Champika Ranawaka urged president Maithripala Sirisena to accept the majority decision of a no-confidence vote against Rajapaksa.
He called for the president to appoint a person from parliament "who can command the majority".
Separately on Thursday, thousands of people supporting former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe gathered in Colombo for a rally at which they urged Sirisena to respect democracy, accept the decision of Parliament and appoint the person with the support of the majority of lawmakers as prime minister.
Sri Lanka has been in a crisis since 26 October, when Sirisena suddenly fired Wickremesinghe and replaced him with Rajapaksa.
